San Rafael teachers’ association ratifies tentative agreements; district to present contract ratification to board

The San Rafael Teachers Association told the school board on June 16 that its membership ratified second‑round tentative agreements covering Article 9 (professional growth), Article 12 and Article 17 (peer assistance and review) with 97.3% voting in favor.
SRTA bargaining chair Kelly Whalen, a fourth‑grade teacher at Coleman, presented the ratification result and described multi‑day bargaining sessions that produced the agreements. SRTA thanked district negotiators and named staff and association members who participated in the talks.
SRTA’s statement to trustees noted the group’s focus on reimagining professional growth and streamlining peer assistance and review for TK–8 educators. Whalen told the board the agreements were the result of several full‑day small‑group sessions and close collaboration between the bargaining teams.
Separately, Alex Verheke, a negotiator for the San Rafael Federation of Teachers (SRFT), told the board trustees would have an opportunity to vote on a tentative agreement reached between SRFT and the district. Verheke encouraged the board to ratify that tentative agreement while reminding trustees that the TA is not a full contract renewal and that further bargaining on outstanding items will continue in the fall.
CSEA chapter secretary Donnie Jo Pipkin also provided a brief update on classified staff bargaining, saying the negotiations team looks forward to continuing sessions in July and hopes to reach agreement then.
The board did not record a public ratification vote for the SRTA membership decision; SRTA reported only its membership ratification result. The board was told it will have the opportunity to consider ratification of any tentative agreement reported by district negotiators in a subsequent agenda item when that motion is presented.
