The state of California is seeking to recruit 10,000 new members for the California Service Corps, vocal leaders said at an event at San Jose State University. Speaker 1, a staff member, said the program will help “young people looking to get involved in their community.”
Program leaders emphasized the scale and variety of work corps members would do. Speaker 2, a commenter, urged participation, saying, “If you wanna be part of a movement that's gonna serve over 5000000 hours of service this year alone, and if you wanna be part of a force that is now bigger than the Peace Corps, then join the California Service Corps.” The event overview said corps members work with local organizations and nonprofits on wildfire relief, tutoring and mentoring, and climate action initiatives.
College fellows in the service corps are eligible for financial support: Speaker 1 said fellows can earn up to $10,000 in scholarships and may receive training for careers in education, social work and related fields. Speaker 3, a staff member, described the community impact of those activities: “When I see our young people out in the community or our Saturday service projects that bring everyone together, we're doing the work of building and maintaining our democracy, our community. We're bridging gaps. We're giving people a sense of purpose.”
Organizers gave a website for more information and sign-ups: Speaker 1 said interested people can visit caservicecorps.com.
The remarks at San Jose State University combined recruitment goals, examples of service work, and information about scholarships; no formal votes or policy actions were announced at the event.
