District updates student records policy to address social media and creates separate challenge process

Director of Student Services Eric Riley told the board that one major change is acknowledging the prevalence of multiple formats of social media and including relevant social media content in student records when it is part of investigations. "Social media... is becoming a very large part of the investigative work that our principals and assistant principals use, to determine whether bullying is taking place," Riley said. The revisions also move the challenge process into a distinct policy section so parents can find the process more easily.
Riley said the update adds more process around who may access student records, how access is recorded and how records are requested. The board moved and approved the student records policy as presented by voice vote.
