Town postpones interns' yard-sale database presentation to July; committee urges caution on new cases

The Town Real Estate Assessment Committee on June 16, 2025, agreed to postpone a presentation on a yard-sale database being developed by municipal interns until July so more committee members can attend and review the work.
Committee members and staff described the database as a tool to organize historic and active yard-sale matters by land-court status, price factors used at conveyance, and a complexity rating that separates "simple" from "complex" cases. The interns' work is intended to help staff and the committee prioritize cases, collate completed-price factors, and prepare materials for the Select Board and the Nantucket Area Real Estate Brokers Association (NAREB).
Staff and members cautioned that the town should be selective about accepting new yard-sale cases while a backlog of older, uncompleted matters remains. The committee noted some private ways, particularly in Surfside, have already been examined and in some cases conveyed; beach-easement matters and other cases with clear public benefit were identified as higher municipal priorities.
The interns named in the agenda are Thomas Bridal and Chase Windisch; Bridal attended the June 16 meeting but Windisch did not. Committee members said the interns have built lists and a rating system to help staff sort cases by land-court status, priority, and complexity and that the database will include price-factor data used by REAC when recommending sale prices. The committee agreed to a postponement to allow broader discussion and to present the database at a future REAC meeting and, subsequently, to the Select Board and NAREB for wider stakeholder review.
No formal vote was recorded to adopt changes to the yard-sale program; the action taken was to postpone the interns' presentation until July so additional members can view the demonstration and offer feedback.
