Sugar Land council canvasses June 7 runoff, administers oaths to new mayor and two council members

The Sugar Land City Council on June 17 formally canvassed the returns of the June 7 runoff election, declaring Carol McCutcheon elected mayor and Jim Vonderhaar and Sanjay Singhal elected to council positions.
The canvass, adopted by ordinance No. 23-78 on first and final consideration, recorded vote totals showing Carol McCutcheon with 6,107 votes (53.05%) to William Ferguson's 5,405 (46.95%); Jim Vonderhaar won the at-large Position 1 seat with 6,050 votes (58.56%) to Maggie Horgan's 4,281 (41.44%); and Sanjay Singhal won the District 2 seat with 2,347 votes (75.13%) to Nasser Hussain's 777 (24.87%). The council also appointed the persons declared elected to the Sugar Land Development Corporation. The canvass motion passed by hand vote 6-0 with one council member absent.
After the canvass, Dean Urbaczek, judge of Fort Bend County Court at Law No. 6, administered the oath of office to Carol McCutcheon. Former U.S. Rep. Pete Olson administered the oath to Jim Vonderhaar, and Mayor McCutcheon administered the oath to Sanjay Singhal. Carol McCutcheon, in remarks after her swearing, said, “My priorities are public safety, reinvestment in infrastructure, responsible growth that aligns with community values, and fiscal accountability.”
The council followed formal procedure by reading the ordinance text into the record as required for first-and-final consideration. No substantive changes to the ordinance were made during the meeting. The new mayor and council members will assume their duties following the swearing-in and brief remarks.
Council ceremonial remarks and photo opportunities followed the oaths; the meeting then recessed for 15 minutes before resuming for a short business session.
