Board approves exception to 180-day CalPERS wait so retiree can fill short-term role

The Visalia Unified School District Board of Education voted 6-0 to approve a resolution requesting an exception to the 180-day wait period under Government Code 7522.56, allowing the district to hire a retiree before the statutory waiting period ends.
Judy Burgess, Administrator of Human Services Development, presented the resolution and said the waiver allows the district to appoint a retiree “to perform such duties while a permanent employee is on leave of absence.” Burgess said the waiver is for highly specialized work necessary to ensure district operations.
The board approved the resolution following a motion by Board Member Odo and a second by Board Member DeYoung. No amendments or dissent were recorded.
