Westonka board hears construction updates; high school opening pushed, tennis courts near completion

The Westonka Public School District board received detailed construction and site updates at its June regular meeting, including timelines for the district tennis courts, a middle school renovation and a multi‑phase high school addition.
A Kraus Anderson representative told the board the district’s new tennis‑court surfacing is in its final layer and “they are currently on track to finish on the twentieth and that’s including with the rain days. We just got that update today.” The representative said pick‑up and storage plans for portable pickleball nets and a fall ribbon‑cutting orientation for community players are being planned.
On the middle school project the contractor reported demolition is finishing and crews are beginning wall framing and mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough‑ins. The representative said a small exterior canopy and a minimal wheelchair ramp remain to be completed.
At the high school site, the contractor described soil corrections after crews found poor fill and an unrecorded utility pipe in the area of the new addition. The representative said crews are placing a rock bed under footings so foundations can be poured and remain stable through rain events. Structural steel installation and precast work are scheduled to start later in the month, and the district now lists a conservative November opening for portions of the project rather than the earlier, more optimistic finish target.
The contractor also told the board that base contract material orders for the project are already in and that the district’s contract protects it from post‑award tariff claims for materials ordered under that contract. The representative added changes that add new steel could still result in additional charges tied to later tariffs.
Board members and staff discussed logistics for temporary classroom space and reuse or resale of furniture and lockers removed from renovated areas; the contractor and district staff said they tried to recover value by offering items for sale within the district. Facilities committee meetings and monthly construction updates were confirmed — the next facilities committee meeting was scheduled for June 16 at 7 a.m.
No new contracts or budget motions were presented or voted on during the update; the session consisted of information and progress reporting.
The district and contractor praised local staff and contractors for cooperation in moving materials and freeing rooms for construction. The board was told that phases of the projects will open in stages next fall as work completes.
