The Cary School District 26 Board of Education on May 27 approved the district’s purchase of the i-Ready benchmark assessment and personalized learning platform to replace the STAR assessment.
"The total cost is 126,830 with 50¢, but that includes a onetime PD fee of $34,500," Curriculum staff member Yvette Rivera said while presenting the recommendation. She told the board the annual recurring cost after the first year’s professional development would be $92,330.
The administration said the i-Ready package includes a benchmark assessment and a personalized learning platform designed to connect assessment results with targeted instructional resources. Rivera said the tools are intended to help teachers address students’ specific needs and potentially reduce duplicated systems.
A board member asked about parent communication, and Rivera said the district plans to provide informational sessions, post resources on the website and consider parent-university sessions so families can learn to navigate the parent platform tied to i-Ready. "We'll make sure to communicate with our families and provide a a platform maybe even through 1 of our, parent university, class sessions that we'll have for our parents next year," Rivera said.
The motion to adopt i-Ready passed on a roll-call vote; board member Catherine Potter recorded the lone "no" vote. The approved first-year cost includes a $34,500 professional-development fee; subsequent annual costs were reported as $92,330.
District staff said the system will be implemented with professional development for teachers and that the administration will notify families when the new benchmarks and parent resources are available. The board did not request additional study or amendments before the vote.
