The Newark City Council economic development committee on Monday began consideration of Ordinance 25-18, which would amend portions of the city's zoning code to remove a provision that currently exempts the Downtown Commercial (DC) district from parking requirements.
A staff presenter told the committee that the DC district currently has "no parking requirements at all," and the proposed amendment would delete that exemption so that the downtown district would comply with the minimal parking standards that apply in other districts. "The fact the DC District got to comply with the rest of the districts and have, at least minimal parking requirements that the other districts had," the presenter said.
Council members asked procedural questions; staff said the change would proceed as a zoning amendment through the planning commission's public hearing process and then return to council with a planning commission recommendation. The presenter noted the existing code allows off-site parking through an agreement between property owners.
No vote was recorded in committee during the presentation; the item was referred to the planning commission public hearing process for review and recommendation before further action by council.
