Commissioners approve offer to preferred EMA director candidate; county to request $55,000 salary from council

Decatur County commissioners voted Monday to offer the emergency management director position to their preferred candidate, pending salary approval by the county council.
County officials said 16 applicants applied for the EMA director position, six were selected for interviews and five candidates were interviewed. The interview panel narrowed the field to two finalists and the panel recommended the top choice to commissioners. "We interviewed 5, good interviews... we have 1 applicant... we have him as our choice, and we want to offer him the position," a county representative said.
Commissioners discussed salary. They said the previous director's budgeted amount for 2025 was approximately $53,650 and that they would ask the county council to approve a $55,000 annual salary for the new hire. The board voted to make the offer contingent on council approval of the proposed salary and to proceed with formalizing the hire if the council approves the requested amount.
County staff said they would present the salary request to council the next day and then return with an executed offer if the council approves the compensation. The motion to offer the job and seek the requested salary passed unanimously.
