A sheriff's office representative told the board that year-over-year comparisons for April showed declines in person and property crimes. The office reported a 2.2% decrease in total calls for service compared with April 2024 and a 28% decrease in total jail bookings for the month. The official said self-initiated contacts were up 28% for the month.
Public-safety staff described a fatal crash on Sunday on Ramona near the Fontana Mill that resulted in one passenger killed and the driver later arrested. The presenter said the crash occurred in the midafternoon and took more than nine hours of on-scene work, including reconstruction and search-warrant activity; the driver was arrested on charges that the presenter described as manslaughter, reckless driving and DUI.
The presenter noted deputies and outside partners responded to the scene, and that a drug-recognition expert from Prineville Police Department assisted. County staff thanked personnel for their on-scene work and noted the case would proceed through established investigative and charging procedures.
No further actions or policy changes were announced; the sheriff's office said it will continue routine investigations and community policing work.
