County appoints Ken Mullins to fill Harvey County Economic Development Council vacancy

The Harvey County Board of Commissioners voted on May 20 to appoint Ken Mullins to the Harvey County Economic Development Council to fill the unexpired term of a departing member; the appointment runs through April 30, 2026.

Beth, representing the EDC executive committee, told the board the organization reviewed multiple applications for the vacancy and recommended Suzanne Loomis based on experience in development and infrastructure. The EDC noted the board’s appointment fills the remainder of Mindy Buddy’s term, which expires April 30, 2026. Several commissioners said they valued bringing fresh perspectives and geographic balance to the board, and discussion among commissioners centered on choosing an applicant from outside Newton to broaden county representation.

After discussion commissioners moved to appoint Ken Mullins to the seat; the board voted and the motion carried, with the minutes reflecting a majority in favor and at least one commissioner opposed. Mullins was present in the meeting and welcomed to the EDC; commissioners noted future appointments will be considered in the next annual cycle.

What the appointment means: Mullins will serve through April 30, 2026, after which the board expects to make further appointments as terms expire and as the EDC continues to focus on industrial-park development and long-range planning for county economic growth. The EDC executive committee encouraged applicants who were not selected to remain engaged and pursue possible appointments through other municipal partners as appropriate.
