Governance committee outlines next steps for comprehensive policy review

With remaining redlines and several policy series still under review, the Fairfax County School Board governance committee used the June 16 meeting to discuss how to approach comprehensive policy review in the coming year. Committee members favored a structured, series‑by‑series process and asked staff to produce a memo capturing priorities and expectations for future reviews.

Members said they want clearer definitions of what a superintendent review should include (legal compliance, best practices, memos and supporting documentation) and an agreed template for staff memos so committee members have the same baseline information. "I think reviewing in a series sounds good," said one member, adding that the committee should define what "review" entails and what materials are expected from the superintendent. Other members suggested creating a transition memo to incoming governance chairs that lists outstanding items and priorities.

The committee chair offered to draft a memo based on the day’s discussion and to work with staff to present it to the full board and the incoming governance committee. Committee members also recommended continuing the practice of providing detailed staff memos in advance and mapping policy sections by theme to reduce duplicate work. No formal votes were taken on the planning items; members agreed on next steps by consensus and instructed staff to prepare the requested memo.
