The Fairfax County School Board governance committee on June 16 approved revisions to Policy 2670, which governs programs for students with disabilities, and voted to forward the revised policy to the full board.
Committee members said the special services department and the advisory committee for students with disabilities had reviewed and approved the draft. "The committee also additionally asked that the final draft remove the reference to, ‘modified standard diploma’ throughout," a committee member noted during the meeting; staff confirmed the wording referencing the modified standard diploma had been removed. Staff said the policy retains language referencing the applied studies diploma because it matches the district’s diploma handout for special education graduation requirements and credit accommodations.
New legal and cross references were added in the revision, and committee members requested that two additional guidance documents — the Transition Resource Guide and the Twice Exceptional Handbook — be added to the cross‑references. Members asked the clerk to place those cross‑references in the cross‑references section before the policy goes to the full board.
A motion to approve the revised Policy 2670 was made and seconded; the committee voted unanimously to send the revision to the full School Board. The committee did not discuss any budgetary impacts at the meeting. The committee also changed the title of a section from "requirements" to "responsibilities" and said the philosophy statement requested earlier had been added to the redline draft.
