District 7 reviews Cognia accreditation findings; progress report due within three years

Williston Basin School District 7 board members heard a summary of a recent Cognia accreditation engagement that evaluated district practices and recommended improvements across several standards.

The presenter summarized areas of strength cited by Cognia, including cultural inclusivity, community engagement, implementation of programs such as Conscious Discipline, expansion of early childhood programming, strategic planning and development of career and technical education pathways. Cognia reviewers also recommended improvements in professional development personalization, stakeholder engagement structures, consistent application of multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS), and student engagement and ownership of learning.

The district reported an Index of Educational Quality (IEQ) score of 2 on Cognia’s scale, which the presenter described as below the average range and triggering a required progress report within three years to show improvements. The presenter said the district’s new strategic plan aligns with Cognia’s recommendations and that the district will prioritize stakeholder engagement, teacher vitality, student agency, technology integration and assessment-driven instruction as part of its implementation.

Board members asked how the report will be communicated; staff said they will brief administrators and staff in the fall, post materials on the district website and consider public forums to share results with families. The presenter said the district will integrate Cognia recommendations into annual goals and board monitoring through the new governance framework.
