Fargo board ends NSBA national-connection membership, 8-1 vote

Board member Robin Nelson moved the motion, seconded by Ally. The motion followed a governance committee review that concluded the national-connection membership’s cost — listed in the packet as $8,620 for the upcoming year, up from about $5,335 — did not justify the additional benefits the committee identified, such as legal briefs, federal advocacy and daily briefs.
Board discussion split on value. Board member Namal urged continued membership, saying, “NSBA has been incredibly valuable. It has allowed me to connect with school board leaders across the country,” and warned of losing legal and federal-policy resources if the district cut ties without a comparable replacement. Namal noted COSBA (a newer consortium of state school board associations) was still developing district-level services.
Other trustees argued the district could still attend national conferences and that the extra natcon subscription provided duplicative communications. Robin said the motion did not bar board members from attending NSBA events and noted that the North Dakota School Boards Association and several states have taken similar steps. President Christiansen clarified that ending the natcon membership would not preclude attending conferences, only the extra subscription service that delivers the briefing products.
The roll call showed eight yes votes and one no (Day); the motion passed 8-1. Board members asked governance to review board travel policy language (GP-14) to avoid limiting conference options in policy and to consider whether a COSBA membership or other alternatives should be pursued.
