Superintendent Rupak Gandhi announces departure; board honors seven years of district initiatives

Superintendent Rupak Gandhi told the Fargo Board of Education that after seven years leading the district he accepted an opportunity that will allow him to spend more time with his children and will step down from his role. The board honored Gandhi with a video, remarks and a letter recognizing his work.
Gandhi reflected on the decision and on his time with the district: “It came down to just not wanting to have any regrets. When my family and I kinda just discussed the opportunity of potentially being able to spend more time with our kids ... we just don't wanna have that regret as parents,” he said. Gandhi added he would miss the work and the district but described the choice as a family decision.
Board members praised Gandhi’s leadership and initiatives. A board reading cited programs launched or expanded during his tenure — Explorer Academy, Virtual Academy and the Self‑Directed Academy — and praised his response during the COVID‑19 pandemic. The reading said, “Your legacy is one of vision and compassion,” and recognized his advocacy for equity and student well‑being.
Gandhi emphasized the team effort behind the district’s progress and credited staff and the community for the district’s accomplishments. The board presented a letter and a small gift during the recognition.
No personnel motion or selection of a successor was taken at the meeting. The board indicated it would continue transitional planning and acknowledged Gandhi’s request that the district hold the usual leadership and accountability discussions over the coming months.
