Board approves policy updates, federal programs and superintendent contract in unanimous votes

After a final discussion, the board voted to remove the requirement for a school board self‑evaluation from policy AFA. The motion passed unanimously.
The board also approved the division’s federal programs application (Title I–IV) and adopted recommended changes to the code of conduct and the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) policy updates. Board members discussed related procedural items such as the memorandum of understanding with the sheriff’s office and processes for seclusion and restraint; staff said they update the MOU annually and review related protocols.
In the meeting’s final action, the board approved the superintendent’s contract extension. The motion to approve the contract was moved by Mister Vaught and seconded by Miss Dombrowski; the clerk polled the board and recorded unanimous approval.
At the start of the meeting the board also certified a closed session in accordance with the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, adopting a resolution that "the New Kent County School Board hereby certifies that to the best of each member's knowledge, only public business matters lawfully exempted from open meeting requirement by Virginia law were discussed." That certification passed unanimously as well.
