Board members debated whether to keep a provision in the district’s norms and protocols requiring an annual board self-evaluation and asked staff to draft a revised policy for consideration on June 2.
Member Miss Dombrowski said the norms and protocols (adopted previously) require the board to evaluate itself annually and asked that the board follow that language. Other members said the exercise would be duplicative or of limited value and that constituents ultimately determine board effectiveness. “I don’t know how you quantitate that to satisfy the question here… I think I just convinced myself that I’d rather not have it in there,” a member said.
Several members proposed removing or revising the self-evaluation paragraph (item P) while retaining constructive elements of the policy — for instance, a commitment that the board develop short- and long-range goals after discussion. The chair directed staff to prepare revised language that would remove the evaluation requirement but preserve useful planning language, with the proposed change to be added to the June 2 agenda for formal action.
