Board weighs single student representative vs. advisory council; plans decisions in June

The New Kent County School Board on May 19 discussed how to structure student representation after interviewing three high school candidates for the nonvoting student-board representative role.
Members praised the applicants and debated whether to appoint a single representative with one or two alternates or to establish a broader student advisory council that would rotate members and provide monthly input. Principal Strickland and Superintendent Dr. Nichols have drafted an advisory-group model that would include 10–12 students across grade levels, use an in-school meeting block to avoid transportation issues and provide focused input on school climate, culture, policy and communication.
“An advisory group would give us a larger net of students… and we can hear from every tribe, every tongue,” one board member said. Another recommended a hybrid approach: a single representative for board meetings supported by an advisory group at the school that would feed topics to the representative.
Administration said existing student council structures (class SCA officers) largely handle internal activities and that the new advisory idea would be broader and school-led. The board agreed to discuss appointments and any necessary procedural items in closed session on June 2 and to determine whether to select a primary representative and alternates or formalize the advisory council.
