Salem Lakes board approves $13,523 turnout-gear purchase after department demonstration

A fire department presenter described the items used by firefighters and why they are costly. He introduced firefighter Brian Nielsen and demonstrated components of an entry ensemble, explaining the National Fire Protection Association standards they meet. "The coat that Brian is wearing is $1,895 per coat," the presenter said, and he outlined several high-cost items including self-contained breathing apparatus units ("New units are 8,500 to $10,000 each") and turnout pants and boots. He summarized the expense: "If you look at the cost breakdown of a typical entry level firefighter ... you're looking at approximately $14,000." The presenter added that departments typically try to issue two sets per firefighter to allow for cleaning and maintenance.
The purchase before the board covered four sets of coats and pants; the presenter said the request was funded from the fire department budget. After a motion and second, the board voted to approve the purchase.
Trustees and members of the public thanked staff for the demonstration, which they said helped explain why protective firefighting equipment carries a high price.
The board also received a brief update that the planned public unveiling of a baby box had been postponed because some organizers could not attend; staff said the box is ready and the unveiling will be rescheduled.
