Mesa councilmembers report water-plant tour, community events; staff cancels this Thursday study session

Mesa City Council members on June 16, 2025 summarized recent visits and community events, reported on a water-treatment plant tour that council members said reinforced confidence in local tap water, and heard staff announce the cancellation of this Thursday’s scheduled study session.

Council member Adams described a Friday morning tour of the Signal Butte Water Treatment Plant and said the operators’ explanations and demonstrations convinced him the city’s water is safe. “So if anybody asked me, is Mesa’s water safe? Yes,” Council member Adams said.

The comments came during the council’s short “current events and conferences attended” portion of the study session, in which members also noted a number of community appearances over the prior week: an ASU Prep summer camp visit to City Hall on June 12; a funeral service for Officer Gabriel Fazio at Central Christian; a midday barbecue fundraiser at Apache Junction High School to benefit Fazio’s family; an adaptive-arts presentation of Finding Nemo at Red Mountain Theater produced by the city’s adaptive sports program in partnership with Arizona Disabled Sports; and a tour of Sunshine Acres. Council members praised the events and thanked municipal departments that supported them.

Staff member Butler told the council that the regular study session scheduled for “this Thursday” would be canceled, and the next study session is set for Thursday, June 26, at 7:30 a.m. The announcement drew no questions from council members. The session closed after the mayor asked for a motion to adjourn; members voted unanimously to adjourn.

Council member Duff was absent and excused for the meeting.

The remarks about the Signal Butte Water Treatment Plant were presented as observations from a tour; no formal council action, vote, or policy change regarding water treatment was proposed or taken during the study session.
