Atascosa County Agrees to Renew Youth Work-Experience Agreement with Workforce Solutions Alamo

Atascosa County Commissioners on Monday approved a two-year renewal of a work-experience worksite agreement with Workforce Solutions Alamo to continue the agency’s Youth Empowerment Services (YES) program in the county.
The renewal, approved after a motion by Commissioner Riley and seconded by Commissioner Gillespie, directs the county to sign the agreement and continue hosting youth interns and career-navigator services in partnership with Workforce Solutions Alamo.
Dan Wallace, a representative of Workforce Solutions Alamo, told the court the YES program helps “young adults who are close to graduating high school, getting a GED, or recent high school graduates” prepare for employment through resume help, interview coaching and employer apprenticeships or mentorships. Wallace said the Alamo region has seen about a 2% increase in hiring this year, with roughly 6,800 new hires, and that Workforce Solutions has served about 1,300,000 people regionally. He said the program placed about 100 youth from Atascosa County in the last two years.
County Judge Weld and other commissioners praised local career navigator Sylvia Guerra, whom Wallace singled out for on-the-ground work in Atascosa County. Judge Weld asked staff to have the renewed agreement ready for signatures and suggested a photograph to mark the partnership.
Discussion vs. decision: Commissioners discussed the program’s local impact and employer outreach before taking the formal vote to approve the two-year renewal. The motion passed with no recorded opposition.
The renewal keeps the county’s participation in the YES program in place and maintains an existing channel for placing youth in county offices and local employers for summer and other internships. The court did not specify implementation deadlines beyond signature and did not attach additional funding obligations beyond existing terms of the agreement.
