The Atascosa County Commissioners Court voted May 27 to approve a one-year loan of artifacts to the Witte Museum for inclusion in a display about the Battle of Medina.
Martin Gonzales of the county historical commission presented the request, saying the Witte Museum sought to display 12 items recovered from private property off U.S. 281 (Gavilan Creek Road) on the Willoughby property. Gonzales described the objects as "9 lead shot and 12 items that they're calling accoutrements, which is buckles and, I think a piece of an old rifle." The minutes record the county attorney reviewed the loan agreement.
Gonzales noted the loan is annual and subject to an audit: "after a year we don't like the way it's displayed, then I'll come back here and we'll either make, put it on the agenda to remove them or leave them there. So at any time, we can pull those artifacts too," he said.
Commissioner Gillespie moved for approval; Commissioner Riley seconded and the motion carried by voice vote.
Why it matters: The loan allows local artifacts to be shown in a regional museum while preserving the county—s ability to recall items after annual review.
What—s next: The Witte Museum will present the display, and county staff will audit the loan annually.
