Atascosa County—s animal-control representative told commissioners on May 27 that the office plans to raise most service fees to cover vaccine costs, staff time and other operating expenses and to update interlocal agreements with several cities and McMullen County.
Sarah Raine, identified in the minutes as the presenter for animal-control contract updates, told the court that the county needs to "get us up to par with being able to run efficiently and also, charging for what we're paying for our services." She said the county included a cost breakdown for commissioners to review and described increases such as "a good $20 for most fees" and larger increases "a 100 for certain things like quarantine fees."
Raine told commissioners the county would meet with cities by July 1 to discuss the proposed changes; if the cities agree, the new fee schedule would take effect Oct. 1. The interlocal agreement update covers Charlotte, Jourdanton, Pleasanton, Poteet and McMullen County, according to the agenda item.
Commissioner Gillespie moved to approve pursuing the amended interlocal agreement and fee schedule changes; Commissioner Pavelic seconded and the motion carried by voice vote.
Why it matters: higher fees and amended interlocal agreements affect municipal partners that rely on county animal-control services and could change costs for residents and animal shelters.
What—s next: County staff will meet with the listed cities by July 1, and any agreed changes would take effect Oct. 1 if authorized.
