The Bangor City Government Operations Committee on June 16 reviewed and referred to the full City Council a proposed policy to govern requests for memorials — such as benches and monuments — in city parks and open spaces.
Staff said the policy would standardize what amenities are appropriate in which parks, allow the Parks and Recreation director to authorize common requests directly, and include an appeals process for disagreements with director determinations. Staff cited examples such as black iron benches at Fairmount Park and granite monuments on the waterfront; the policy also includes provisions on maintenance and decommissioning.
Committee discussion included a question about the durability of materials used at the municipal golf course; staff said the policy would help standardize selections and maintenance expectations. With a motion and second and no objections, the order will go to the full City Council for consideration on the next meeting agenda.
