Missoula issues proclamations for Juneteenth and Pollinator Week

Mayor Andrea Davis read two proclamations on June 16 declaring Juneteenth Independence Day on June 19 and proclaiming the week of June 16–June 20, 2025, as Missoula Pollinator Week.
The Juneteenth proclamation, read jointly on behalf of the city and county, commemorated the arrival of Union soldiers in Texas on June 19, 1865, and recognized Juneteenth as a time to honor emancipation and “rededicate ourselves to the cause of liberty,” language included in the proclamation read on the council floor. The proclamation noted that Juneteenth is recognized as a City of Missoula holiday and that city offices will be closed on the holiday. The Montana Black Collective was identified as hosting a Juneteenth celebration at Fort Missoula from about 10 a.m. to noon.
The mayor also read a proclamation recognizing Missoula Pollinator Week and the city’s partnership with the National Wildlife Federation to promote pollinator habitat. Councilor Jordan said the proclamation “covers a lot of the things that I’ve learned in my day job” and thanked county staff and extension for working with residents to replant boulevard areas with native, pollinator-friendly plants.
The proclamations were ceremonial and required no council vote; they were presented as part of the meeting’s special presentations and proclamations segment. Officials encouraged residents to attend the Juneteenth celebration at Fort Missoula and highlighted local efforts to restore native plant habitat in public spaces.
