Counseling staff outline K–12 time-use, staffing ratios and goals for system support and data plan

Corine Mushee, the district counseling coordinator, briefed the Camdenton R-III School District Board of Education on June 9 about counseling department evaluations, staffing ratios and goals for 2025–26.
Mushee summarized the department’s two annual evaluations: the Time Task Analysis (TTA), which tracks how counselors spend time across program components, and the Internal Improvement Review (IIR), which reports program implementation progress. Mushee said the district’s counselors recorded a three-percentage-point improvement on the IIR this year and that responsive services — time spent in individual and small-group work and crisis response — remained a departmental strength.
Mushee told trustees the recommended counselor-to-student ratio is 1:250. Districtwide staffing is “below that” ideal, she said, and buildings have used flexible staffing to support higher-enrollment sites. She said the department’s goals for the coming year are increased system support (intentional collaboration among counselors, principals and stakeholders), a K–12 counseling data plan to show how counseling contributes to the district’s College and Career Ready skills goals in the CSIP, and expanded secondary-group programming.
Mushee noted implementation work already underway: nine-through-12 curriculum work at the high school, monthly inter-building counselor meetings, and an active parent advisory that meets twice a year. She said counselors code their time monthly to generate the TTA and use the IIR to set priorities.
Board members asked about lesson delivery frequency. Mushee said delivery varies by building: Dogwood (approximately monthly), Hawthorne (every other month), Oak Ridge (about quarterly), middle school (weekly on Fridays) and increased focus at the high school next year. Mushee said counselors will emphasize system support so buildings can move toward full program implementation.
No formal board action was taken. Trustees thanked Mushee and asked staff to continue reporting implementation progress and any staffing changes needed to meet the 1:250 target.
