Commission approves airport hangar, cell-tower height extension and apartment interior change

The Planning Commission on June 16 approved three site-plan items: a new airport hangar, a cell-tower height extension, and an interior modification increasing apartment units.
An engineer representing applicant Greg Kearl, Kenny Sadler, described a 10,000-square-foot hangar to be added to an existing cluster of hangars accessed from Ledford Mill Road; staff said stormwater and grading comments were addressed and the commission approved the site plan.
A tower modification at 217 Southeast Atlantic Street to add 21 feet of height to a cell tower also won approval. Staff told commissioners they had received structural and safety analyses for the extension and that the applicant's subsequent permits to install antennas (reported to be for a major carrier) will follow once the tower work is approved. A commissioner asked whether airport safety or fall containment was an issue; staff said there were no concerns from the airport and sufficient engineering documentation had been provided.
Finally, the commission approved a major modification to an already-approved site plan at 106 Flowertown Road that converts the interior from nine apartments to 13. Staff said the original plan provided excess parking so the increase in unit count does not create a parking shortfall. All three approvals passed on voice votes.
