Board hears multi-school construction update; Martinsburg auditorium sprinkler issue could delay reopening

Facilities staff briefed the Berkeley County Board of Education Monday on construction and renovation work at multiple schools and identified areas where design changes or change orders may be needed.
Hendersonville Early Learning Academy: Staff reported ongoing blockwork and steel roof truss installation, mockups of exterior brick, and pending utility coordination with FirstEnergy. Facilities said one corner requires rework and the district is awaiting final approval from the utility.
Tile Hill Intermediate and Tomahawk: Tile and ceiling grid installation were under way at Tile Hill Intermediate; Tomahawk remains on schedule for a July completion. Facilities noted a recommended retaining wall (or alternate rip-rap solution) to stabilize a steep bank adjacent to Tomahawk's baseball field; the retaining solution could be a potential change order.
Martinsburg High School: Renovation progress was reported in the band room and auditorium. Facilities warned the state fire marshal has determined the existing sprinkler main is undersized for the renovated auditorium; staff said the current main is 3 inches and will need to be upsized to 6 inches to meet the revised sprinkler demand caused by a new ceiling configuration. Facilities said architects are designing the upgrade and the contractor will provide a timeline; staff warned the auditorium completion date previously estimated at November-December could change depending on the sprinkler design and installation.
Mountain Ridge Primary: Site work continues despite rainy conditions; crews are preparing connecting roads that will form new traffic patterns when schools open.
Berkeley Heights and Burke Street: Facilities reported restroom renovations and floor-drain replacements at Berkeley Heights that required jackhammering and floor replacement. Burke Street's entire interior has been gutted; exterior window replacement and restroom upgrades are in progress.
Hetzel and other schools: Restroom and flooring upgrades were also underway at Hetzel High School and other sites; transportation and HVAC piping replacements were reported for various campus locations.
No formal board action was required. Facilities staff said pending change orders and sprinkler redesigns will be brought back to the board as needed; they committed to return with cost and timeline estimates once architects and contractors provide designs.
