Council OKs ordinance to buy two downtown properties; legal-description for Pekin Street parcel to be added

The Lincoln City Council approved an ordinance on June 16, 2025, authorizing the purchase of property identified for the Broadway Street and Pekin Street parcels from Heartland Bank and Trust. Alderman Sanders moved the ordinance and Alderman Anderson seconded; the motion passed by roll call vote.
City staff told the council the ordinance contains the correct legal description for the Broadway property but the legal description for 601 Pekin Street had not yet been supplied by the seller’s intermediary. City legal staff said the council may pass the ordinance tonight and amend the ordinance the following day when the correct legal description is available; amendments have been done previously and become effective once signed.
Mister Hovlett (city legal staff) advised the council that he expected the Pekin Street legal description to be provided the next day and that an amended ordinance would be prepared to reflect the correct description. Council members indicated they were comfortable proceeding with the vote with the understanding that staff would amend the ordinance when the missing description arrived.
The council approved the ordinance by roll call with no recorded nay votes. Staff said they will file the corrected legal description and amend the ordinance as necessary the next day.
