Parent urges cooperative IESA middle-school wrestling; district says plan ready pending budget approval

Lindsay Record, a parent and District 186 graduate, urged the Board of Education to approve a cooperative Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA) middle-school wrestling program to give district students an earlier start in the sport and help close a competitive gap with neighboring districts.
Record said her son did not start wrestling until high school and that many high-school opponents had three to eight years of prior wrestling experience. She said a middle-school program could improve student development, build confidence and create pathways to college scholarships.
Superintendent Gill and athletics staff told the board the district had already done substantial planning. The district's high-school coaches have agreed to support a middle-school cooperative team, staff said, and the district has identified mats, potential practice sites and initial staffing considerations. Officials noted Title IX obligations will require inclusion of girls in wrestling programming.
District staff said the program is contingent on budget approval: they will post coaching positions, finalize practice locations and advertise the program once the board completes budget actions for the coming school year. No formal board action was required at the meeting; staff said they will move forward with hiring and scheduling after the budget is approved.
