Caribou to hold second vote after RSU 39 budget validation fails; council sets July 8 election and appoints wardens

Following the results of the RSU 39 budget validation election, the Caribou City Council on Monday scheduled a follow-up election for July 8 and appointed municipal election officials.
City clerks reported that 589 Caribou voters participated in the June election; the vote on the proposed school budget in Caribou was 146 in favor and 443 opposed. A second article on holding the election every three years passed in Caribou (421 yes, 167 no).
Under state procedure, the failed validation requires the municipality to conduct another election according to the schedule in the council packet. The council set the July 8 start time for 8 a.m. and appointed Danielle Bressette as election warden and Christina Drinkle and Amber Mendoza as deputy wardens for the July 8, 2025 RSU 39 budget-validation election. Councillors Bagley, Kelly, Deputy Mayor Smith, Terrio and Watson voted "Aye" on the appointments.
Councilors discussed the potential for repeated votes if the question continues to fail and noted that other municipalities have held multiple validation votes. Staff agreed to post election dates on the city website and proceed with required election preparations.
