Akron council approves demolition of Goodrich Middle School, fire station renovations and Lehi Safe Akron contracts

Councilman Hannah, whose ward includes the school, said the measure has broad neighborhood support: "This ordinance is a long time coming," he said, adding that neighbors in Ward 5 "are gonna be jumping for joy." The clerk recorded that the ordinance passed 12‑0.
Council members also approved an ordinance authorizing construction work at Fire Station No. 13 in the Firestone Park area. "This is just to move forward with a few renovations at 13," Councilman Kammer said. That ordinance passed 12‑0.
Councilwoman Amobian introduced a substitute ordinance authorizing the mayor or his designee to enter into contracts with multiple firms to provide services for the Lehi Safe Akron program and said the item would be placed on the consent agenda. "These are dollars that we've gotten. It's actually 7.5 mil, I think it is," she said, describing the work as the first phase of roughly "3 mil and something." She also said the committee had discussed minority contractor participation and technical skill requirements for some firms.
Other items placed on the consent agenda included an ordinance authorizing the disposition of a city‑owned parcel (Summit County parcel number 6764549) and ordinances to advertise for appraisal and acquisition/relocation consultant services tied to community development programs, and for purchase and installation of green infrastructure and landscaping for Akron waterways.
Council President Somerville called the consent agenda and, after a vote, the clerk recorded that the consent agenda passed 12‑0. No separate roll call votes were taken on the items placed on consent during the meeting record.
The approved ordinances were placed as emergency ordinances and will proceed to implementation through the mayor’s office and the departments identified in the ordinances. Council members did not request additional roll‑call votes on the items placed on consent during the meeting.
