Design panel approves windows and openings at 118 Main Street

The Montpelier Design Review Committee unanimously approved a request to add second-floor window openings to the brick portion of 118 Main Street, following guidance from the state historic preservation review.
Applicant Alicia Feiler described the plan as adding multiple new openings on the building’s southern side and repairing existing first-floor windows. "Those windows are going to match the same size openings, the same style," Feiler said, and committee members noted the size, proportion and rhythm of windows must remain compatible with the historic building.
Meredith Crandall read the applicable design-review criteria for alterations to historic structures, including preserving character-defining features, proportional fenestration and compatibility of materials. Committee members asked to see the applicant’s sketch and confirmed that some infill would be re-opened and that several proposed changes were replacements of earlier openings; Feiler said one existing louvered vent would be converted to a double-hung window.
The committee voted to approve the application as proposed. Crandall told the applicants the city would issue the administrative paperwork and provide a blue notice for the project file and window posting related to any appeal period.
