Commissioner Carl Johnson proposed forming a road-safety advisory group at the June 12 Committee of the Whole meeting to study problem locations and recommend safety improvements after recent serious crashes on county roads.
Johnson recommended members include the county highway engineer, sheriff's office representatives, township officials, GIS, a county board member and administrative staff. He said the group would meet bimonthly to identify trouble spots and advise the county board on low-cost, practical measures to improve safety. Johnson emphasized the committee would not make regulatory changes itself but would provide recommendations to the board.
County State's Attorney Dave Wilson asked that his office be consulted to avoid any unintended legal obligations should the county "undertake" responsibilities that create new duties. Johnson and other board members said the committee's role would be advisory; staff agreed to consult the state's attorney and to return with a formal proposal for scheduling and membership. No formal vote was taken.
