Berkeley County planning staff announced multiple public meetings to collect feedback on proposed impact fees, saying the residential fee is currently set at roughly $5,500 while a commercial fee schedule is under development.
Staff said two meetings are scheduled for the next day — one at 10 a.m. and one at 5 p.m. — and a third meeting is planned for July 2, with additional meetings to be added if needed. The residential fee number was described as preliminary and “not in stone.” The commercial fee, staff said, will be calculated per square foot, with larger buildings expected to have a lower cost per square foot.
During the meeting a staff member said they had “gotten negative feedback from the same person over and over and over,” indicating some early public opposition, but staff emphasized that the public meetings are intended to collect broader input before finalizing fees. No formal action or vote on the fees occurred at this meeting; the announcement was informational and to solicit public comment.
Members of the public may attend the scheduled meetings to comment on the proposed fees and staff will incorporate feedback into the ongoing fee study. Contact the Berkeley County Planning Department for meeting locations, the draft fee schedule, and instructions for submitting written comments.
