Town officials said Westville must redraw its voting-district lines after receiving notice from the state legislature and that the new maps must be completed by June 30. A town official said staff will forward the legislative guidance and may call a special meeting for council approval if required.
The change stems from direction the town received from the legislature, the official said, and applies despite Westville’s at-large elections. "We've been notified that we have to redistrict our voting boards. The legislature ... determine we have to have it done by the June 30," the official said during the council meeting. The official added Doug (a staff member) would follow up and asked whether representatives from each party should assist with the redistricting work.
Council members discussed practical concerns including the cost of hiring outside consultants. One councilmember noted other communities are spending “thousands and thousands” on redistricting work and said Westville lacks funds for a large contract; the official said the town will try to handle the work in-house and will forward the guidance and maps that are available from the state. The council noted the last time they completed a map appeared to be around 2010 and said a special meeting might be necessary to approve any new plan before the June 30 deadline.
No formal vote or map was adopted at the meeting. Town staff said they will circulate the legislative criteria and any available mapping tools, explore options for drafting plans that keep current council members from being paired in the same district, and coordinate additional meetings if needed.
