Jennings County school board approves multiple teacher hires and summer support staff

The Jennings County School Corporation Board of Trustees approved multiple personnel recommendations, including certified-teacher hires, a master teacher stipend, and numerous summer support staff positions, by unanimous vote.
The board approved Ellen Capes for the Master Teacher Stipend for the 2025–2026 school year and approved Alyssa Kent for a GCE teaching position and Gail Reitzman as a Scipio Elementary special education teacher. The board also approved a pending recommendation for Lucilia (Lucy) Ernstus as a Scipio teacher, contingent on hiring requirements.
Board members then approved a large list of support staff appointments for summer school and extracurricular coaching. Approved summer roles included multiple bus aides and drivers (both four-hour and six-hour routes), part-time summer custodians at the middle school, volunteer and paid assistant and head coaches for middle- and high-school athletics, and a number of other aides. A sampling of names read into the record: Phyllis Absley, Kathy Bowling, Kevin Cakes, Matt Cakes, Kathleen Claire, Dawn Cokerl, Robin Cokerl, Greg Disk, Shauna Goins, Shane Howard (volunteer), Kendra Erwin, Brandon McIntyre, Kristen Minnick, Cynthia Phelps, Levi Ross, Shanna Sanchez, Katrina Shepherd, Donna Smith, and Melissa Wayner.
A motion to accept the certified-teacher recommendations was made by Pat and seconded by Travis; that motion passed 5-0. The motion to approve the summer support staff list was moved by Travis and seconded by Chauncey; the board voted 5-0.
During discussion a board member asked why some names appeared twice for both six-hour and four-hour bus routes. A staff speaker explained that six-hour routes served elementary full-day summer programming (starting May 27) while four-hour routes covered high-school-only sessions that began June 9. The clarification was provided on the record and the board proceeded to vote.
The board welcomed one of the new hires, identified in the record as Alyssa (surname alternately recorded as Kent and as Kitt), who attended the meeting with family and was greeted by board members. The board did not discuss salary amounts for individual hires during the public portion of the meeting.
