Lake Forest Park appoints Shorecrest student to Climate Action Committee, council talks youth outreach

The City Council unanimously confirmed the appointment of Sandy ("Sandra" in the agenda packet) Weber, a 14‑year‑old student at Shorecrest High School, to the city’s Climate Action Committee.

Sandy Weber told the council she wants to serve because she is "strongly in saving our planet" and described concerns about polar ice melt and wildlife impacts. Weber said she would like the committee to focus on affordable ways for people to help the environment and suggested outreach and fun volunteer activities to increase youth participation. "I think social media is a good way," she told council members, noting Instagram and TikTok as channels to reach teens.

Council members praised Weber for volunteering and asked about specific ideas. Councilmember Riddle commended her for stepping up before summer break, and another council member asked about outreach to young people; Weber responded that painting and similar community events were effective recruitment tools because younger people attend and bring friends. The council formally moved and seconded her appointment; the motion passed unanimously.

Several council members encouraged Weber to bring friends to the committee and said the Climate Action Committee’s work will dovetail with school and community activities. The council did not take any other action related to the committee at the meeting.
