The board approved a personnel committee recommendation to permit the district to extend and approve contracts to veteran teacher candidates who accept positions during the summer, allowing the district to secure experienced hires before the start of the school year.
Committee members said the practice helps the district recruit veteran teachers who may require a timely offer to resign from their current districts. The authorization applies only to veteran educators hired during the summer; newly hired teachers who are not veterans will continue to be brought to the full board through the normal approval process prior to the school year. The administration said the move aims to avoid losing candidates due to board-meeting scheduling constraints.
Board members said they would still receive the same personnel information in subsequent board packets, and the personnel chair said any summer hires will be reported at the next board meeting for ratification.
A board member asked about current openings; administration noted one physics-teacher opening with seven applications to date.
