Goochland School Board approves conveyance of former elementary school property to county

Dr. Armstrong, a division staff member speaking for the administration, told the Goochland County School Board that the former Goochland Elementary School property and the GTEC preschool building, declared surplus in November 2024, are ready to be conveyed to the county by deed.

"The item you have for your approval tonight is, in order for the board to sign the deed to that property which will convey the property to the county of Goochland," Dr. Armstrong said. He said county attorney McGee and the county administrator will work with the division to develop a lease that will allow the school division to continue program use of the GTEC building and portions of the former elementary school (including robotics and wrestling space) for the near term.

Board members moved and approved the transfer by voice vote during the action portion of the meeting. The board motion to approve the transfer was made on the record and passed after the chair called for those in favor to say "aye." The transcript records no opposition or abstention at the time of the vote.

Dr. Armstrong emphasized the conveyance is not intended to end the division's current use of the facilities: "Subsequent to the deed being signed by the board and by the county, Miss McGee and the county administrator will work to develop a lease for the school division to continue to use the space at the GTEC Building for our current programs there in CTE, as well as the old GES where we still host our robotics team..." He also noted long-range plans remain to construct a CTE addition and fine-arts work at the high school; those projects will be part of future conversations with the county.

The board did not specify lease terms or dates at the meeting. The deed-signing was approved by the board and will be executed with the county; drafting of a lease and specifics on future construction were described as next steps.
