Community group asks board to equalize stipends for volunteer club sponsors; board says stipend audit will be included in next budget cycle

A member of the Exchange Club of Poquoson asked the school board on May 20 to add stipends for teacher sponsors of the Excel Club and Leo Club to match stipend levels given to sponsor teachers of Kiwanis-sponsored clubs.
Carol Wood, organizer for the Excel Club at Poquoson High School, told the board that Excel Club sponsors volunteer substantial hours organizing meetings and community service activities and asked the board to "consider equally compensating the teachers in these positions to the same level as the other teachers who are compensated." Wood provided a written request and said the club’s teacher sponsor, Simone Huey, averages about 16 hours a month of face-to-face time with students.
Board members responded that supplements and stipends will be evaluated as part of an annual review integrated into the fall budget process and that a supplement audit will be part of that work. One board member said the stipend adjustments would not be retroactive to the budget just approved and that any change would be considered for the next fiscal cycle. No formal motion or vote on stipend changes occurred during the meeting.
Staff said the stipend and supplement review will be brought forward as a regular element of the budget process so the board can consider parity across sponsored clubs and other extra-duty assignments.
