Elementary LEGO League expands in Clark County after grant funds two teams

Clark County School Board members heard a presentation on May 19 about the district’s recent elementary LEGO League participation, which was supported by a grant that covered materials and coach stipends and allowed the division to field multiple teams.
Jess Fultz and Patrick Hausman, who led the presentation, said they and Harry Holloway helped secure a grant that supplied materials for LEGO League at the elementary level and provided stipends for coaches. The funding allowed the division to field multiple teams and to provide after‑school meetings culminating in a half‑day Saturday expo.
Students described the expo format and awards. Oliver Lobel, a student team member, said, “we had a big poster board and it displayed all of the stuff we worked on like our journey,” and explained teams presented a coded vehicle on a mat and answered judges’ questions about their design and coding. Coaches said teams won various awards at the expo, including coding and design honors and school‑level creativity awards.
Presenters said the LEGO League exercises combined problem‑solving, teamwork and basic coding and that the program exposed students with a range of skills to engineering‑type activities. Staff noted high student interest and parent support and recommended continuing the program as part of spring or after‑school enrichment.
Board members thanked coaches, students and parents and noted the program’s role in offering different learning opportunities for elementary students.
