Big Bear High School held its Class of 2025 commencement in the school's new stadium, where Principal Tina Fulmer certified that the seniors had met diploma requirements set by the state of California and by the Bear Valley Unified School District and student leaders presented a senior gift.
The ceremony, the first graduation held in the new stadium, featured student performances, two valedictorian speeches and remarks from Superintendent Manny Marquez. "The Bear Valley Unified School District enjoys an outstanding reputation for excellence in education," Principal Tina Fulmer said as she welcomed families and dignitaries to the ceremony.
The senior class unveiled a planned Go Bears mural that will be painted on the back of the stadium press box. Senior class president Sitalali Tafoya Rivera told the crowd, "our senior gift is actually gonna be a Go Bears mural on the back of the press box here in this stadium." Vice president Julia Osborne said the class raised funds through multiple efforts and thanked classmates and supporters for their work on the project.
Tiki Cantu Wong and Gavin Chen delivered valedictorian remarks. Cantu Wong urged classmates to avoid measuring themselves by others, saying, "Comparison is the thief of joy." Student performers and readings punctuated the program; student Cody Edwards read an original poem and Luke Andrews performed a song.
Superintendent Manny Marquez drew on his longtime ties to the district in closing remarks, saying, "I am proud beyond words of what you've become," and urging graduates to carry the community's support forward. Principal Fulmer formally presented the diplomas and certified that the seniors had "met the standards for a high school diploma as required by the state of California and by the Bear Valley Unified School District."
The ceremony also recognized two longtime educators who are retiring; Principal Fulmer named Mr. Bo Kent and Mr. Jim Motorhack and thanked them for their years of service. As the program concluded the principal presented the class of 2025 and graduates exited the field.
Less-critical details from the ceremony included student-led pledges and the school alma mater and fight song performed by choir and band members. The senior class gift is slated for installation on the stadium press box; district staff accepted the gift on behalf of the school.
