Prince Edward board adopts Kiddom for K–5 and Mathspace for 6–12 math instruction

The Prince Edward County School Board voted to adopt new math instructional materials on Tuesday, approving Kiddom for kindergarten through fifth grade and Mathspace for sixth through 12th grades.
Staff told the board the materials were evaluated by teachers, special-education staff, building administrators and central-office curriculum staff using the Virginia Department of Education rubric. The adoption follows classroom pilots: teachers used one package in algebra I and a grade-8 class since January to assess usability.
Presenters said Kiddom scored highly on alignment, teacher resources and ease of use; Mathspace was singled out as fully aligned to Virginia math standards and integrated with the Desmos platform for upper-level calculations. The committee recommended Kiddom for elementary grades and Mathspace for the middle and high school sequence, including algebra and geometry.
Board members repeatedly emphasized access for all students. The committee prioritized print plus digital availability rather than digital-only resources; staff told the board they would supplement language-support resources where vendor packages lacked them.
The board approved the recommendation and the presenter said vendors will be invited to provide training during the July curriculum-writing period so staff can prepare pacing guides and materials for the 2025–26 school year.
