Cohoes district schedules public hearing, summer rollout for student device pouches

The Cohoes City School District will send parent communication the week of June 23 about student device pouches and hold a public hearing July 2 to incorporate updated language into the district code of conduct and an electronic-device policy, Superintendent O'Shea told the Board of Education on June 11.
The hearing will address the district's required student and personnel electronic device policy; O'Shea said staff training is set for Sept. 2 and the pouch rollout will begin the first full week of school. District leaders also plan a joint presentation Aug. 18 and said they will invite parents from schools that have already implemented the program so families can hear from them in advance of freshman orientation.
O'Shea told the board the district has already conducted training sessions with staff and will continue family and staff outreach over the summer, and that updated materials will be posted on the district website. Principal Tarlo confirmed the rollout will include schoolwide conversations and distribution during the first week of classes.
Board members voiced general support during the meeting. One board member said she was “very excited about the rollout” and that she had confidence administrators “will do what’s right for the students,” while another said the middle and high school teams have coordinated closely.
No formal vote on the policy occurred at the June 11 meeting; the board scheduled the July 2 public hearing for the code-of-conduct changes and the electronic-device policy, at which the board may take formal action.
