Enrollment declines continue; kindergarten yield about 75% of births, VIC program enrollment small

Superintendent John Simpson presented the district’s enrollment report at the June 11 meeting and told the board that overall resident enrollment has declined since 2021 and that the district’s kindergarten yield is about 75% of children born within district boundaries.
Simpson explained that the district uses the last Wednesday in September as the official date for state reporting and that resident enrollment figures differ from total enrollment because they exclude tuition‑paying students and students who attend via outside programs. He told the board the Webster Groves VIC (Voluntary Interdistrict Choice) program currently has 46 students, down from several hundred earlier in the district’s history, and noted that this year’s cohort sizes mean the program will shrink as the oldest VIC cohorts graduate.
Board members discussed recruitment and retention strategies, including coordinated open‑house events and communications about district programs to families during critical transition points. Simpson said the district continues to enroll students through the summer and that prior years’ summer enrollment increases (for example, 33 students between June 1 and the start of school in the previous year) can materially affect staffing decisions.
No board action was taken on the enrollment report; staff will continue monitoring trends and report back.
