Mandeville High esports team honored after LHSAA state championships

Coach Jared Foray told the board that esports — competitive video-game teams — is the fastest-growing high-school activity nationally and that Louisiana has more than 100 participating schools. Foray said Mandeville’s program began in 2021 with two titles (Super Smash Bros. and Rocket League) and has since expanded to six competitive titles; he noted the program’s state championships in Super Smash Bros. and Rocket League across multiple seasons.
Sam Spiegel, a 2023 Mandeville graduate now on an esports scholarship at Loyola, described how participation helped him develop teamwork and leadership skills and said colleges in Louisiana now offer esports scholarships ranging from small awards to, in some cases, full athletic scholarships.
The board asked the team, coaches and families to stand for recognition and displayed the state trophies on the dais. Superintendent Jabia and President Green thanked the team for representing Mandeville High.
