Board approves charter renewal and grade-configuration changes amid public questions

The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board on June 12 approved, as part of its consent agenda, an early renewal and amended charter contract for Helix Aviation Academy to change its grade configuration from grades 9–12 to K–12 and approved a modification to change Forest Heights Academy of Excellence from grades K–8 to K–5.
Public comment and concerns: James Finney urged the board to pull the Helix item for more review, saying, “The HCS board has not requested a grade expansion … I see none of that in your backup.” An online commenter, Jen Guidry, supported the Forest Heights change and argued that some underenrolled middle schools should be revisited.

Board procedure and outcome: The charter and grade-configuration items were included in the consent agenda and approved with the rest of the consent items after a motion to accept the consent agenda. The board did not pull item 14 or item 15 for separate consideration.
Next steps: The Helix contract as presented authorizes the name change and grade-configuration change; board members noted the action does not in itself authorize additional seats. Staff said any change to enrollment capacity or seat counts would require separate approval.
